A Private Chef for a Group of 10 in Cape Town — Formats, Costs and the Restaurant Question
Ten people is the table size where a private chef stops being a treat and starts being the sensible option. Here is what it costs, which formats suit ten, and how it compares with booking a restaurant room.
For ten guests, a private chef dinner starts from R850 per person, so from R8,500 for the table, comfortably above the R3,900 minimum invoice. Groceries are billed on top at cost, with receipts. The chef shops that morning, cooks in your kitchen, serves the table and leaves the kitchen clean. from R850 pp per person · Min invoice R3,900.
The short answer
For ten guests, a private chef dinner starts from R850 per person, so from R8,500 for the table, comfortably above the R3,900 minimum invoice. Groceries are billed on top at cost, with receipts. The chef shops that morning, cooks in your kitchen, serves the table and leaves the kitchen clean.
Ten is where our large-table rate begins, which is why it is such a good size to book. Our private chef service in Cape Town covers tables of two to fourteen for a single dinner, from Camps Bay to Constantia to the Winelands, and ten sits right in the middle of that range: big enough to feel like an occasion, small enough for one chef to plate every course properly.

Why ten is the tipping point on price
Our dinner pricing has two published bands. Tables of three to six start from R1,150 per person, and tables of ten or more start from R850 per person. Both carry the same R3,900 minimum invoice. The effect is that a table of ten often costs less per head than a smaller one, because the chef's time, the shopping and the cleanup are shared across more plates.
If your group is hovering just under ten, ask in the consult which rate applies to your exact number. The quote shows the per-person line and the total before you commit, so there is no guesswork about where the band falls.
Private chef or a restaurant room for ten?
The honest comparison is with a restaurant private room, not the main floor, because booking a table for ten on a Saturday is a project in itself. On our private dining in Cape Town page we cite restaurant private rooms at typically R1,250–2,950 per head before wine, and wine is where restaurant markups bite. At home, you buy the wine at retail, from a merchant, an estate or your own cellar, with no corkage and no markup.
The other differences are about the evening rather than the bill. A restaurant room shares a wall with the main floor and works to a seating schedule; your villa shares nothing and runs on your table's clock. Nobody has to arrange transfers both ways or stay sober to drive. Children, music and noise are your rules. And when dinner ends, you are already home.
Restaurants do win in one case: a very large group at very short notice, where a restaurant's existing floor and stock are the easier answer. For ten people with a few days' runway, in-home dining is usually the better and cheaper call once the wine is counted honestly.

The kitchen and the team for a table of ten
A standard home kitchen is enough for ten: a hob, an oven, counter space and running water. The chef arrives three to four hours before the first course and works quietly around your afternoon. If canapés are booked they land at 18:30, the first course at 19:00, and by 22:00 the kitchen is cleaner than we found it. Beach houses and off-grid villas get induction backup, and we plan around load-shedding windows with you in advance.
Table service is part of every private chef dinner, so the chef cooks, plates and serves the table. For a plated menu with a lot of moving parts, or a host who wants to sit down rather than top up glasses, add a waiter from R195 an hour on a four-hour minimum, or a chef assistant from R1,750 per meal. Both are itemised on the quote so you can decide line by line.
Ten people, more than one night
If the ten of you are staying together for a week, price the stay as well as the dinner. Our villa chef rates are per day, not per head: a dinner-service day starts from R5,950, a full day of three meals from R6,900, and the seven-day bundle from R38,500, with groceries at cost on top. At ten guests, a dinner-service day is already below ten covers at the per-person dinner rate, so for three or more chef nights it is worth asking for both options on one quote.
Our guide to booking a private chef for one night or the whole stay sets the two pricing models side by side with worked examples.
Dietary needs at a table of ten
At ten guests, the odds are high that someone is vegetarian, someone avoids gluten and someone has an allergy. That is normal. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and allergy needs are planned in the menu consult, not patched on the night, so collect them once from the group and send them with your brief.
We are halaal-friendly with strict protocols: separate prep, dedicated equipment and sourcing agreed with you beforehand. Tell us once and the whole menu accounts for it, rather than one guest eating a different, lesser meal.
Booking a dinner for ten
Five to seven days' notice covers most dates. December and public-holiday weekends need three to four weeks, and the festive super-peak books out months ahead. Public holidays carry our published 1.5× multiplier, and 25 December, 31 December and 1 January carry 2×.
Send the date, the area, the guest count and any dietary needs on WhatsApp. We reply within the hour, 08:00–20:00 SAST, the menu consult follows within one business day, and a fixed itemised quote arrives before you pay anything. A 50% deposit locks the date. Gratuity is never added or expected; if you want to tip on the night, it goes to the people who cooked and served.
