A Private Chef for One Night or the Whole Stay — Which to Book
One unforgettable dinner, or a chef who cooks for the whole holiday? They are different products with different pricing. Here is how to tell which one your trip needs.

The short answer
Book a single dinner when the evening is the point: a birthday, an anniversary, a reunion, the one night the whole group is together. Book the chef for the stay when the food is the point: a family holiday where nobody wants to think about meals, a group that eats at the villa most nights, or guests with dietary needs that make restaurants hard work.
Both are part of the same private chef service in Cape Town, with the same vetted chefs, groceries billed at cost and a fixed itemised quote before any deposit. What changes is how the booking is priced and what the chef is there to do. A one-off private chef dinner is priced per guest around a set format. A villa chef is priced per day for chef time across the meals you choose.
How a one-night booking works
A single dinner is built like a restaurant evening at your table. The menu consult happens on WhatsApp within one business day, the chef shops that morning, arrives three to four hours before the first course, cooks, serves and leaves the kitchen clean. You choose a format rather than a number of hours: the classic three-course dinner, the signature dinner with canapés, an amuse and a palate cleanser, a tasting menu, or a romantic dinner for two.
Pricing is per person and published. Private chef dinners start from R850 pp for ten or more guests and from R1,150 pp for three to six, with a R3,900 minimum invoice. The signature dinner is from R1,050 pp, the five-course tasting menu from R1,200 pp (minimum four) and dinner for two from R1,450 pp, or the couple package from R3,900. Groceries are billed at cost with receipts, on top of those prices.
Five to seven days' notice covers most dates. December and public-holiday weekends need three to four weeks, and the festive super-peak books out months ahead.
How a whole-stay booking works
A villa chef is booked by the day or the week. The published day rates are from R4,250 for a single-meal day (breakfast or lunch, about four hours), from R5,950 for a dinner-service day (four to five hours) and from R6,900 for a full day of three meals (up to fourteen hours), with groceries at cost on top. The 7-day villa bundle is from R38,500 for seven consecutive days with the same chef, roughly 10% off stacked day rates.
The real difference is continuity. The same chef cooks across the booking, so by the third day the kitchen knows who takes coffee at six, which child eats early and which guest avoids shellfish. A pre-arrival consult on WhatsApp maps the week before you land, so menus don't repeat unless you ask for a dish again.
Outside peak season, two to four weeks' notice is usually enough for a villa booking. Winter stays, June to August, run eight to ten percent below the standard villa rates.

- Staff: a waiter (from R195/hr, 4-hour minimum) or a chef assistant (from R1,750 per meal) can be added to either for larger tables.
- Notice: five to seven days for most dinners; two to four weeks for most villa stays outside peak.
- Deposit: a 50% deposit locks the date on both, after you approve the fixed itemised quote.
Three worked examples
These use the published from-prices only, before groceries and before any Zone 2–3 travel. Your quote confirms the right format for your headcount and dates.
- 01A couple, one anniversary night: the romantic dinner package from R3,900 for two. A whole-stay booking makes no sense here unless you also want breakfasts cooked every morning.
- 02Twelve friends, one reunion dinner and restaurants the rest of the week: a private chef dinner from R850 pp, so from R10,200 for the table. One night is the right tool.
- 03A family of six for a week who want dinners at the villa most nights: compare a run of one-off dinners at the small-group rate of from R1,150 pp (from R6,900 a night) with villa dinner-service days from R5,950, or the 7-day bundle from R38,500 for full coverage. Once you want the chef three nights or more, ask for both options on one quote.
When one night is the right call
One night wins when you are in Cape Town to eat out as well as in. The city's restaurants, wine estates and seafood spots are part of the trip, and most groups only need one evening at home that feels like an occasion. It also wins for short stays, for locals hosting at home, and for anything built around a single moment: a proposal, a milestone birthday, a farewell dinner.
It is also the simplest way to try a chef before committing to more days: book one dinner early in the stay, then decide whether you want more.
When the whole stay is worth it
The whole stay wins when meals are a daily job rather than a treat. Families with young children, multi-generation groups, guests with allergies or strict dietary needs, and anyone in a villa far from town feel the value quickly, because every meal is planned around them rather than negotiated at a restaurant.
You don't have to staff every day. Staffing every dinner of a fortnight is something we gently discourage, because some of the best Cape Town evenings are out.
What it costs
The table shows the published from-prices for both kinds of booking. Travel is included in Zone 1 (City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, Southern Suburbs, Constantia and Hout Bay). Stellenbosch, Paarl and Somerset West add R300–500 per day, and Franschhoek and beyond R500–800 per day. Public holidays carry a 1.5× multiplier, and 25 December, 31 December and 1 January carry 2×.
Cancellation terms are the same for both: a full refund 14 or more days before, 50% at 7–13 days and no refund under 7 days. During the festive super-peak (26 December to 7 January) the deposit is non-refundable. All of it is set out on our pricing page.
