Graduation weeks fill Cape Town's restaurants and guest cottages at the same time, and the family that has flown in wants to celebrate together. A dinner at home solves most of that. Here is how to plan it.

UCT's graduation weeks in March, June and December drive a clear spike in the Southern Suburbs, where Rondebosch, Newlands and Claremont guest cottages fill up and celebration dinners book out early. The whole area is Zone 1, so travel is included.
Why at home beats a restaurant that week
In a graduation week, every family in the city wants the same Saturday table. Booking a restaurant for twelve becomes a project, the seating window is fixed and grandparents have to be driven both ways. At home, the evening runs on your clock: the ceremony can run late, the photos can take as long as they take and dinner simply waits.
It is also easier to make the evening about the graduate. Speeches don't compete with the next table, younger cousins can go to bed upstairs, and the people who travelled furthest get a proper meal without another outing.
Formats for a family table

When to book
Graduation windows cluster on the same weekends, so book as soon as the ceremony date is confirmed. Five to seven days covers most ordinary dates, but graduation weeks are not ordinary, and December and public-holiday weekends need three to four weeks. Public holidays carry our published 1.5× multiplier, and 25 December, 31 December and 1 January carry 2×.

Planning for three generations
Graduation tables mix grandparents, parents, siblings and friends, and dietary needs come with them: vegetarians, a gluten-free grandparent, a nut allergy among the younger cousins. Collect the list once and send it with the brief. Every requirement is planned into the menu before the day, never patched on it, and halaal-friendly service follows our strict-protocol standard: separate prep, dedicated equipment and sourcing agreed beforehand.
Children are easy to plan for. Give us the number and ages, and simpler plates or a kids' platter can be planned alongside the main menu. Family-style service helps here, because everyone takes what they want.
Timing the evening around the ceremony
A sample Saturday for a fourteen-person family dinner in Newlands after an afternoon ceremony.
- 0114:30 — the chef arrives and takes over the kitchen while the family is at the ceremony.
- 0217:30 — photos run long; nothing in the kitchen is waiting on a fixed time.
- 0318:30 — the family arrives home to drinks and canapés on the veranda.
- 0419:15 — sharing starters down the long table, then the speeches.
- 0520:00 — mains family-style.
- 0621:15 — dessert and coffee; the kitchen is cleaned and the evening carries on without us.
Beyond the Southern Suburbs
If the family is staying in Constantia, the Atlantic Seaboard or the City Bowl, the same formats and Zone 1 pricing apply.
