The short answer
Choose a grazing table in Cape Town when you want a centrepiece guests drift back to: showers, kitchen teas, daytime parties, gallery openings and wedding arrival hours. Choose canapés when you want food that finds the guests: cocktail parties, launches, receptions and any room where people should keep moving and talking.
On published prices, grazing tables are from R495 pp with a minimum of 15 guests, and canapé receptions are from R395 pp with a minimum of 20. Both are part of our catering in Cape Town, and they combine well on one quote.

How each format works
A grazing table is a styled spread on boards and levels: cheeses and charcuterie with provenance, seasonal produce, warm breads and a sweet edge, labelled with printed dietary tent cards. Guests serve themselves at their own pace. Setup, styling and complete breakdown are included in the per-person price.
Canapés are one-bite pieces produced in small batches and passed on trays by servers, hot and cold alternating, in waves through the event. Guests never leave the conversation to eat. The piece count is built into the quote by event length.

Side by side
The practical differences that usually decide it.
Included
- Minimum: 15 guests for grazing, 20 for canapés. Below that, platters or a private chef dinner usually fit better.
- Guest movement: grazing pulls guests to one place; canapés keep the whole room fed, corner to corner.
- Staffing: a grazing table needs little service staff; canapés need servers, about one per twenty-five to thirty guests.
- Service window: a grazing table is styled for two to three hours; canapés can run four hours with a substantial late pass.
Quoted separately
- Weather: grazing tables need to be indoors or under cover, because Cape wind and direct sun spoil a styled spread. Canapés travel outdoors more easily.
- Photographs: a grazing table is a set piece in itself; canapés photograph as moments on the tray.
- Kitchen: grazing needs a table surface and little else; canapés need a working kitchen, and a domestic kitchen usually handles up to about 80 guests.
Which one for which event
A rough guide by occasion, assuming a standing or mingling crowd:
- 01Baby or bridal shower, daytime: grazing table, built denser with proteins and salads so it can be the meal.
- 02Cocktail party or launch, early evening: canapés, six pieces per guest for two hours.
- 03Wedding arrival hour: either, or both. Canapés on the lawn and a grazing table under cover.
- 04Gallery opening or studio event: a grazing table styled architecturally, with a short canapé pass at doors.
- 05Year-end party running past three hours: canapés with a late substantial pass, or a grazing table followed by a hot pass.
- 06Garden party in summer: canapés outdoors, with any grazing table placed in the shade.
Can it be the whole meal?
Yes, both can replace dinner if you plan them that way. A grazing table for a daytime event is built denser, with proteins, breads and substantial salads so guests eat properly. A canapé reception replaces a seated meal at eight to ten pieces per guest with a substantial late pass, such as braai sliders or linefish tacos.
For evenings running past three hours, we recommend adding a hot element whichever format you choose. Older crowds and long events often need a real dinner instead, and we'll tell you honestly when that applies. Our guide to buffet vs plated vs family-style catering covers the seated options.
When to combine them
The two formats are strongest together. A common shape is a canapé pass for the first hour, while guests arrive and the room fills, followed by a grazing table that opens as the speeches end. Another is a grazing table through the afternoon with a staffed braai later in the evening. We price combinations as one quote, so you can see the whole event in a single number.
Worked costs from published prices

For canapés, add servers at one per twenty-five to thirty guests, with waiters from R195/hr on a 4-hour minimum, so one or two waiters add from R780 to R1,560. Grazing tables include setup, styling and breakdown, with any service staff itemised separately.
