A Sunset Dinner on the Atlantic Seaboard — Timing, Wind and Menu
On the Atlantic Seaboard the sun sets into the sea, and the whole evening can be built around it. Here is the timing month by month, the wind and a menu paced to the light.
From Bantry Bay to Llandudno the sun goes down over the open Atlantic — around 20:00 in December and January, and near 17:45 in June. Plan a sunset dinner backwards from that time: canapés about forty-five minutes before, the main plated as the light goes, dessert after dark. Then pick a terrace that is sheltered from the south-easter on the night. Our private chef on the Atlantic Seaboard service runs dinners from R850 pp for ten or more, with travel included because the whole strip is Zone 1. from R850 pp per person · Min invoice R3,900.
The short answer

This guide covers the three things that decide whether a sunset dinner works: the clock, the wind and the kitchen.

Sunset times, month by month
Approximate sunset times for Cape Town, rounded, on the 1st and 15th of each month. South Africa doesn't use daylight saving, so these hold year to year within a minute or two. Golden light starts roughly half an hour earlier.
- 01January: about 20:00 all month — the longest evenings of the year.
- 02February: 19:50 early in the month, 19:40 by mid-month.
- 03March: 19:25, moving to about 19:05.
- 04April: 18:40, moving to about 18:25.
- 05May: 18:05, moving to about 17:55.
- 06June: about 17:45 — the earliest sunsets of the year.
- 07July: 17:45 to 17:55.
- 08August: 18:05 to 18:15.
- 09September: 18:25 to 18:35.
- 10October: 18:45 to 19:00.
- 11November: 19:15 to 19:25.
- 12December: 19:40, reaching about 19:55 towards Christmas.
Pace the evening to the light
In summer, the light lets the dinner start outside. A December rhythm for a table of eight might be canapés and a poured Cap Classique at 18:45, the first course at 19:15 as the light softens, the main plated around 19:50 at sunset, and dessert and coffee after dark. If someone is planning a toast or a question, aim for about twenty minutes before sunset — photographers call it the sweet spot.
In winter, sunset arrives before dinner does. Turn it into a sundowner: canapés on the terrace at 17:00 for the last of the light, then dinner indoors from about 18:30, with slower, warmer food. The view is still the point; it just becomes the opening act rather than the main course.
Tell the chef the time you want the main on the table and everything else is planned backwards from it — arrival, prep and the first course.
Choose the address for the wind
Summer on the Seaboard is bright and often windy. The south-easter — the Cape Doctor — can arrive in the afternoon, and some terraces handle it far better than others.
Included
- Bantry Bay sits in the wind-shadow of Lion's Head and is often the calmest address on the coast; terraces stay usable when the rest of the Seaboard retreats indoors.
- Clifton's boulder-sheltered coves often sit in relative calm when the wind flattens Camps Bay two kilometres south — but villas there are reached by steps, so load-in starts early.
- Camps Bay has the classic view and more exposure; a covered or glass-fronted terrace is the safer plan on a windy forecast.
Quoted separately
- Sea Point is apartment dining: promenade-facing balconies and compact kitchens, with induction backup in the kit.
- Llandudno has no restaurants or shops, so the villa is the venue — big tables, sea through the glass.
- Shoulder months, October and April especially, regularly deliver still, warm evenings worth planning around.
The plan B is part of plan A
Every sunset dinner we cook on the coast has a fallback agreed in the consult. If the wind arrives, service moves inside the glass line or to a sheltered courtyard — the menu doesn't change, only the room. We check the forecast with you the day before and make the call early, so the table is set once, in the right place.
The same goes for power. Load-shedding planning is standard across the strip: we check the schedule against your date and design a menu that holds through a slot, with gas and induction backup where needed. Candles were going on the table anyway.

A menu that suits the light
Sunset menus work best when the course that lands at sunset plates fast and doesn't need explaining — nobody is looking at the plate for the first five minutes. A summer example from our seafood-led menus:
- 01Canapés as guests arrive: snoek pâté on roosterkoek, and West Coast oysters when available.
- 02First course in the golden light: yellowtail with Cape herbs and citrus.
- 03The sunset main: linefish with lemon butter, or lamb from the coals for a braai-style evening.
- 04After dark: dark chocolate with sea salt, coffee and the last of the wine.
What it costs, and how to book
Orientation numbers from the published card. Twelve guests on a private chef dinner from R850 pp is from R10,200. Eight on the four-course signature dinner with canapés from R1,050 pp is from R8,400. A table of four at from R1,150 pp is R4,600, above the R3,900 minimum invoice. A romantic dinner for two runs as a couple package from R3,900, and the Cape seafood journey is from R1,350 pp (min 4). Your invoice shows chef time, groceries at cost with receipts and any add-ons; the travel line is zero in Zone 1.
One team covers the whole strip, loading in from mid-afternoon; Victoria Road parking is tight from Bantry Bay south, so we arrive early and park off-street where buildings allow. December books first — the 25th, 31st and 1 January carry the published 2× multiplier — so send your date, guest count and address on WhatsApp early.
