If you book a private chef in Cape Town through us, there is no tip on your invoice and none is expected. Gratuity is never added automatically: the bill shows chef time, groceries at cost with receipts, and any add-ons you chose — nothing else. The short answer
If you book a private chef in Cape Town through us, there is no tip on your invoice and none is expected. Gratuity is never added automatically: the bill shows chef time, groceries at cost with receipts, and any add-ons you chose — nothing else. If you want to tip on the night, that is entirely your call, and it goes to the people who cooked and served your evening.
So the honest answer to what to tip a private chef in South Africa is: whatever reflects the evening, including nothing at all. Guests who do tip usually borrow a reference point they already know — the familiar South African restaurant habit of roughly 10–15% for good service — and apply it to the service part of the bill rather than the whole thing. This guide explains how to do that sensibly, who should receive it, and how it works on a multi-day villa booking.

Why our published price is the whole price
Some private chef pricing in the market is quoted per person ‘plus tip’, which leaves the guest guessing at the real cost. We went the other way. Every rate on our pricing page is the price for the quoted scope: private chef dinners from R850 pp for ten or more guests, smaller tables of three to six from R1,150 pp, and a R3,900 minimum invoice on dinners. Staffing has its own published lines, and festive multipliers — 1.5× on public holidays, 2× on 25 and 31 December and 1 January — are written into the first version of the quote.
That matters for tipping because it removes the obligation. The team is paid for the work on the quote. A tip, if you leave one, is a thank-you for how the work was done — the pacing, the care taken with a nervous guest's allergy, the kitchen left cleaner than it was found. Our guide to what a private chef service includes walks through every line you are already paying for.
It also means you are never tipping to fix a shortfall. If something on the night fell below what was quoted, that is a conversation to have with us, not something a smaller or larger tip should paper over. Tell us on WhatsApp and we deal with it.
If you want to tip: a sensible way to size it
There is no formula we ask you to follow, and on WhatsApp we're happy to suggest a range for your booking. These are the principles most hosts land on:
Included
- Tip on the service, not the shopping. Groceries are billed at cost with receipts — a pass-through — so a percentage on that line inflates the tip without rewarding anyone's work.
- Use the per-person or day-rate line as your base: the per-person line for a seated dinner, the day rate or the 7-day bundle for a villa booking.
- Treat restaurant habit as a reference, not a rule. If you'd tip 10–15% for excellent restaurant service, the same instinct applied to the service lines is reasonable — and less is fine.
Quoted separately
- Scale with the shape of the night. A four-hour dinner for six is different work from a fourteen-hour villa day, a late New Year's Eve service or a surprise party with a covert arrival.
- Fixed amounts work too. Many guests prefer a round figure per team member rather than a percentage of anything.
A worked example from the published card
Illustration only — the arithmetic, not a recommendation. A seated dinner for twelve at from R850 pp is R10,200 on the per-person line. A 10% thank-you on that line would be about R1,020, shared between the chef and anyone serving with them. Groceries, billed at cost, stay out of the calculation.
For a table of four on the small-group rate of from R1,150 pp, the per-person line is R4,600 — above the R3,900 minimum invoice — and the same 10% would be about R460. If you added a waiter (from R195 an hour with a four-hour minimum, so from R780), that person is part of the team on the night and should share in whatever you leave.

Villa chef stays: tip once, at the end
On a multi-day villa chef booking, daily tipping gets awkward fast. The cleaner habit is one thank-you at the end of the stay, when you can judge the whole run — breakfasts that adapted to the children by day three, the braai night, the late dinner after a Winelands trip. Because the same chef cooks across your whole booking, there is one person (plus any assistant) to thank, not a rotating cast.
Base it on the chef-time lines rather than the total. A dinner-service day runs from R5,950 and a full three-meal day from R6,900, both before groceries; the seven-day bundle is from R38,500 for the week. If a chef assistant joined for the bigger meals (from R1,750 per meal), include them. Groceries at cost — often a large line on a long stay — stay out of it.
If you're not sure what fits, ask us before the last day. We'll suggest a range for the length and shape of your stay and tell you exactly who worked it, so nobody gets missed.
Who should receive it, and how to hand it over
Whoever worked the booking: the chef first, then any assistant, waiter or bartender on the night. If you leave one envelope, say it is for the whole team; if you'd like to recognise someone specifically, a separate envelope or a word to the chef does that. On larger staffed events — a canapé reception with servers, a bar run by a bartender at from R225 an hour — the simplest approach is a single amount for the team, handed to the chef at the end.
Cash is the most direct way to make sure it reaches the people in the room. If you won't have cash at the villa, mention it on WhatsApp beforehand and we'll suggest the simplest option.
Timing: at the end of the service, not before. Tipping in advance turns a thank-you into a payment, which is exactly what our published pricing is designed to avoid.
When not tipping is completely fine
Always. Nobody on our team will hint, and nothing changes on your next booking. If the budget went on the dinner itself, that is what the published price is for.
Other thank-yous land just as well: a note to the chef, a specific word about a dish, asking for the same chef next time, or passing our name to a friend planning their own Cape Town stay. And if you are still at the planning stage, our private chef cost guide sets out what the evening itself costs before any of this comes up.
