Private Chef for a Family Holiday in Cape Town — Kids, Timings and Allergies

Cooking for a family on holiday is a different job from cooking a dinner party. Here is how a chef handles children's suppers, allergies and a house that runs on beach time.

A family holiday needs a chef who plans around the children, not just the adults. That means an early supper for the kids and a proper dinner for the grown-ups afterwards, allergies handled with a written protocol rather than good intentions, and a menu that keeps the fussiest eater fed without turning the whole table into a children's menu. A private chef in Cape Town can do all of that in one service, because the kitchen cooks for your household alone. from R5 950/day per day.

The short answer

A family holiday needs a chef who plans around the children, not just the adults. That means an early supper for the kids and a proper dinner for the grown-ups afterwards, allergies handled with a written protocol rather than good intentions, and a menu that keeps the fussiest eater fed without turning the whole table into a children's menu. A private chef in Cape Town can do all of that in one service, because the kitchen cooks for your household alone.

This guide is about the family-specific part of the job. If you're still deciding which days of the stay to staff, our villa chef holiday guide covers the sample week. What follows is how the food itself works when the table runs from toddlers to grandparents.

Two sittings, one service

The single most useful thing a family chef does is split the evening. Children eat early, often around half past five, while the adults are still on the beach or at the pool. The chef then resets the kitchen and serves the adults' dinner once the little ones are in bed. Both sittings fit inside one dinner service, so you pay for one chef visit, not two.

Summer makes this matter more than it does at home. Cape Town sunsets run late in December and January, so adults naturally want to eat at eight or later, which is far past a five-year-old's limit. Splitting the evening keeps everyone happy without anyone eating cold leftovers or being dragged to a restaurant at bedtime.

Children's suppers don't need to be bland. The best ones are smaller, simpler versions of what the adults get later: grilled linefish with chips instead of the plated version with beurre blanc, lamb chops off the braai, a pasta made with the same tomatoes that go into the adults' starter. Kids who taste the real thing on night one are often asking for the grown-up plate by night four.

Allergies and fussy eaters: the consult does the work

Allergies are where a family booking differs most from an adult dinner, so we handle them before you land, not at the first breakfast. The menu consult collects every allergy, intolerance and preference in the group, and menus are written around them from the start. Our dietary requirements protocols apply in full: a dedicated prep sequence for allergen-free dishes, separate utensils, and labelled service so the right plate reaches the right child. Adapting a menu costs nothing extra.

Be precise in the consult. "Nut allergy" can mean peanuts only, tree nuts, or both, and traces matter differently for different children. Tell us where the adrenaline auto-injector is kept and who knows how to use it. We'll also be honest about the limits of a holiday-rental kitchen: we control what we bring and cook, but cross-contact advice for a house we've never cooked in is part of the conversation, not an afterthought.

Fussy eaters are the easier problem. A chef who cooks for your family every day keeps a running note of who eats what, so the child who only eats plain pasta gets plain pasta while the rest of the table moves on. By midweek most families find the kitchen has adjusted to them without anyone repeating themselves.

Formats children actually enjoy

Some of our formats suit families better than a long plated dinner. These are the ones we suggest most often for mixed-age groups.

  1. 01Family-style dinners: platters down the table, everyone takes what they like, and nobody has to sit through four courses.
  2. 02A chef-run braai: the fire is the entertainment, the timing is relaxed, and children can eat as soon as the first chops come off.
  3. 03A cooking class at the villa: families book these as the rainy-day plan, with children at their own station.
  4. 04A picnic hamper: packed by the chef for a beach afternoon or a Kirstenbosch summer concert, which runs November to April.
  5. 05A late, generous brunch the morning after arrival, so the first full day starts without anyone cooking.

What a family week costs

Family bookings usually run on our villa chef day rates rather than per-person dinner pricing. Those rates are per day, not per head, which suits a big household: a dinner service starts from R5,950 a day and a full day of three meals from R6,900, with groceries billed at cost and receipts attached. Children don't inflate a day rate the way they do a per-person restaurant bill.

A worked example from those published rates: a family staying seven nights who book four dinner services pay from R23,800 in chef time before groceries. If you'd rather never think about food, the seven-day bundle from R38,500 covers full days at roughly 10% under stacked day rates. For a larger extended family, a chef assistant from R1,750 a meal keeps two sittings running smoothly.

Two things change the total. Travel is included in Zone 1 (City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, Southern Suburbs, Constantia and Hout Bay), while Winelands villas add a published R300–800 a day. Festive dates carry published multipliers: public holidays at 1.5×, and 25 and 31 December and 1 January at 2×. Every line appears on a fixed, itemised quote before you pay a deposit; our pricing page has the full rate card.

Booking and timing for school holidays

South African and European school holidays overlap in December and January, which is exactly when villas and chefs book out. If you're coming for the festive super-peak, 26 December to 7 January, book by September where you can, and note that deposits in that window are non-refundable. Outside the peak, the standard terms apply: a 50% deposit locks the date, with a full refund 14 or more days out.

Send the brief early and send it complete: dates, the villa's area, the number of adults and children with their ages, every allergy, and the nights you want covered. A good brief gets a precise quote in one reply, and we reply within an hour between 08:00 and 20:00 SAST. Once the date is locked, the chef has time to plan the children's menus properly instead of improvising on arrival day.

Families who've booked a chef once tend to come back to the same pattern, and that's the real case for doing it. The adults get a proper holiday, the children eat well, and nobody spends the week at the stove.
