PLANNING — SUMMER

Kirstenbosch Concert Picnic Ideas — What to Pack, When to Arrive and a Chef-Built Hamper

The Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts run from November to April, and the picnic is half the evening. Here is what to pack, what survives the lawn and how a hamper from our kitchen works.

A good Kirstenbosch concert picnic is built from food that travels: cured and smoked things, salads that dress when you pour, bread baked that morning, cheese that reaches the right temperature as you sit down, and a dessert that doesn't collapse in the heat. Pack it cold, keep it cold, and arrive early, because the lawn fills.

The short answer

A good Kirstenbosch concert picnic is built from food that travels: cured and smoked things, salads that dress when you pour, bread baked that morning, cheese that reaches the right temperature as you sit down, and a dessert that doesn't collapse in the heat. Pack it cold, keep it cold, and arrive early, because the lawn fills.

If you would rather not pack it yourself, our gourmet picnic in Cape Town service builds a hamper the afternoon you eat it, for timed pickup or delivery to a pre-agreed point near the gardens.

Check the rules before you pack

Concert-day rules, gate times and what you may bring in are set by the gardens and can change from season to season, so read the current programme before you plan the hamper. The same goes for estate lawns elsewhere: rules on glass and alcohol vary from venue to venue, and when we pack a hamper we check them first.

The setting is the point. Thousands of people share the lawn below the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, the stage sits in front of the mountain, and the light goes pink as the music starts. Plan the picnic for that: compact, easy to eat on a blanket, and nothing that needs a knife and fork in the dark.

Food that survives a summer lawn

The test for every item: will it still be good after an hour in a cool bag and another on the grass?

Included

  • Cured and smoked items: charcuterie, smoked fish, terrines.
  • Salads in jars with the dressing at the bottom, shaken or poured just before eating.
  • Bread baked that morning, sliced at home, wrapped in a cloth.
  • Firm cheeses that improve as they warm a little; soft ones only in a cold bag.

Quoted separately

  • Summer fruit: stone fruit and figs through the season.
  • A dessert that holds its shape in the heat; nothing with cream that has to stay set.
  • Plenty of water and an alcohol-free option alongside any wine.

A sample concert menu

An example of the register, not a fixed menu: our hamper menus rotate each October for the summer ahead.

  1. 01To start — snoek pâté with crackers and pickled onions.
  2. 02Jar salads — roast butternut with feta and seeds; heirloom tomato with basil.
  3. 03The main event — cold roast chicken or smoked trout with a lemony dressing.
  4. 04Bread and cheese — a morning loaf with two Cape cheeses and fig preserve.
  5. 05Sweet — a sturdy tart and summer stone fruit.
  6. 06To drink — Cap Classique or a crisp Cape white, chilled correctly, or a full alcohol-free spread.

The kit list

The things people forget, in the order they forget them.

Included

  • A large blanket with a waterproof backing, because the lawn can be damp.
  • An insulated bag with ice packs, packed cold-to-warm.
  • Plates, napkins, a small board and a knife for the cheese.

Quoted separately

  • A bag for your rubbish, so the lawn is left as you found it.
  • A warm layer for after sunset, and sunscreen for before it.
  • A torch or phone light for packing up in the dark.

Timing, and how our hampers get there

The lawn fills early on popular nights, so give yourself time to find a spot before the music starts. Our concert hampers are timed for gates-open pickup or delivered to a pre-agreed point before the queues peak, and the cold chain is held in proper insulated kit, so the Cap Classique arrives at temperature rather than ambient.

Every hamper is built the day you eat it. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and halaal-friendly hampers are made separately with strict protocols, never as the standard hamper with items taken out. Picnics are priced per hamper and per person on an itemised quote, because the format varies too much for one honest from-price, and beyond twenty guests we quote it as an event with staffing.

Weather, season and booking

Weather is the honest risk of any picnic. If the forecast turns, you can move the date within our published cancellation tiers, or convert the hamper into a spread at your villa; the food works indoors unchanged. December to February is super-peak, so book the hamper when you book the concert tickets.

The same hamper works beyond the gardens, on Winelands estate lawns and in villa gardens. Planning to propose on the lawn? The styled Proposal Picnic and our proposal dinner are covered in our guide to proposal ideas in Cape Town. Send your concert date, group size and any dietary needs on WhatsApp, and we reply within the hour, 08:00–20:00 SAST.
