How to Host a Client Dinner at Home in Cape Town — A Calm, Professional Evening

A client dinner at home says more than any restaurant booking, as long as the host is free to host. Here is how to plan one that runs to time, feeds everyone properly and costs exactly what was quoted.

Keep it to one table, one well-paced menu and one person whose only job is the kitchen. For most client dinners that means a plated three- or four-course dinner for six to twelve guests, with a waiter if the table is larger than eight, wine chosen in advance and a firm finish time. The short answer

Keep it to one table, one well-paced menu and one person whose only job is the kitchen. For most client dinners that means a plated three- or four-course dinner for six to twelve guests, with a waiter if the table is larger than eight, wine chosen in advance and a firm finish time. That is exactly the job of a private chef in Cape Town: your chef shops, cooks, plates, serves and leaves the kitchen spotless, so you spend the evening at the table with your guests rather than at the stove. The rest of this guide covers the decisions that make a business dinner feel effortless.

Why at home, and when a restaurant is still better

A dinner at home is quieter, more personal and easier to steer. There is no neighbouring table, no rush to turn the room and no bill arriving at the wrong moment. Conversations that would never happen in a busy dining room happen naturally at your own table, and the effort is noticed by the people you invited.

A restaurant still wins when the group is very large, when nobody wants to travel to the host's address, or when the guest list is uncertain until the last day. If any of those apply, keep the restaurant. If the point of the evening is time and trust, bring the chef to the table instead.

The planning checklist

Six decisions to settle before you send the brief, in the order they matter.

Included

  • Headcount and seating: one table, with a seating plan you decide before the day.
  • Dietary needs: ask every guest in the invitation and send the answers with the brief.
  • Register: relaxed family-style sharing or a plated menu with formal pacing.

Quoted separately

  • Wine: your own cellar, a short list you buy, or a sommelier pairing.
  • Timing: arrival drinks, first course and a realistic end time for a weeknight.
  • Service: whether the chef serves alone or a waiter joins for a larger table.

Timing the evening

A weeknight client dinner should feel generous but end at a civilised hour. This is the shape our dinners follow; your chef adjusts it in the consult.

  1. 0115:30 — the chef arrives three to four hours before the first course and works quietly around your afternoon.
  2. 0218:30 — guests arrive; canapés and a first drink if you have booked them.
  3. 0319:00 — first course at the table.
  4. 0419:45 — main course, paced to the conversation rather than the clock.
  5. 0520:45 — dessert and coffee, with time for the conversation you invited people for.
  6. 0622:00 — the kitchen is cleaner than we found it and the chef has gone.

Choosing the menu

Business dinners reward confident, familiar food cooked very well. A Cape-led arc works for most tables: snoek pâté with charred sourdough to start, Cape linefish with lemon butter, springbok loin with a rooibos jus and a milk tart to finish. It tells visiting clients where they are without asking anyone to be adventurous, and every course can be reworked for dietary needs.

Avoid the dishes that demand attention. Whole fish that needs filleting at the table, anything eaten with the hands and very rich multi-course tasting menus all pull focus from the conversation. If you do want to make a statement, our five-course tasting menu starts from R1,200 per person for four or more guests, and our guide on how to host a tasting menu dinner at home explains how to pace it.

Dietary requirements are handled in the menu consult, not on the night. Vegan, gluten-free, allergy-aware and halaal-friendly plates are designed into the menu at no extra charge and served at the same time as everyone else's, so no guest is singled out.

Wine and service

We serve but don't sell alcohol, so the wine is yours: from your own cellar or a short list you buy for the evening. If you want the wine to be part of the impression, a sommelier pairing runs from R450–650 per person and sommelier hosting from R3,500 per event; our private sommelier page explains both. Either way the chef plans the courses around what will be poured.

Service sets the tone of a business dinner. For six to eight guests your chef can plate and serve alone. Above that, add a waiter from R195 an hour or a premium waiter from R275 an hour, both on a four-hour minimum, so glasses are topped up and plates cleared without the host getting up.

Paperwork and peace of mind

A business dinner has to be explainable afterwards. Our quote lists every line, menu, staffing, groceries, rentals and travel, before you pay the 50% deposit that locks the date, and groceries settle at cost with the receipts attached. The price you approve is the price you pay, which makes the evening easy to sign off.

If your chef falls ill, every confirmed event has a named backup chef, and the replacement-or-refund guarantee applies. The full terms are on our booking protection page. Lead time is five to seven days for most dates, longer in December, so send the date, guest count and suburb on WhatsApp as soon as the invitations go out. We reply within the hour, 08:00–20:00 SAST, and our private chef dinner page shows every package with its from-price.
