The short answer
Most housewarmings suit one of three formats: canapés passed through the house from R395 per person (minimum 20 guests), a styled grazing table from R495 per person (minimum 15), or a gourmet braai in the garden from R650 per person (minimum six guests or R5,500). Each comes on one fixed itemised quote, and the team arrives, serves and leaves the kitchen clean.
Our catering in Cape Town page lists every format with its from-price and minimum. For a housewarming the choice usually depends on three things: how many people are coming, whether there is a usable garden, and how long you expect the party to last.

Matching the format to the house
The right format follows the space and the crowd, not the other way round.
Included
- An apartment or townhouse with 20 or more guests: canapés passed in waves, so nobody has to find a seat.
- A house where people drift between rooms: a grazing table indoors as the centrepiece, from 15 guests.
- A garden and a smaller group: a gourmet braai on real wood coals, from six guests.
Quoted separately
- Family first, friends later: a plated private chef dinner for close family, then a canapé party another day.
- A big open house across an afternoon: canapés first, then a grazing table that carries the later arrivals.
How much food per guest
For canapés, our planning rule follows the length of the party. We build the count into your quote.
- 01One hour of drinks before people head out: four pieces per guest.
- 02A two-hour drop-in: six pieces per guest.
- 03A three-hour party that replaces dinner: eight pieces per guest, dessert bites included.
- 04A long evening of four hours: ten pieces per guest, with a substantial pass such as braai sliders at hour three.
- 05Grazing tables are priced per person and built to feed the whole headcount, with dietary tent cards on every dish.

Canapés: the format that suits most housewarmings
A housewarming is a tour as much as a party. People arrive in waves, wander through the rooms, stand in the kitchen and end up on the balcony. Canapés follow them. Pieces are produced in small batches and passed in waves, so the last guest gets what the first guest got, and the trays alternate hot and cold so nothing feels repetitive.
A typical pass might include snoek pâté on roosterkoek bites, mini bobotie pies, lamb kofta with apricot and mini milk tarts, with the menu set in the consult around the season and your guests. For standing events we plan one server per twenty-five to thirty guests, which is usually one person for a housewarming. Our canapé catering page shows the full rate table.
Grazing tables and garden braais
A grazing table works when the house has a natural gathering point: a long kitchen island, a dining table pushed to the wall or a covered patio. It is styled on boards at three or four levels, with Cape cheeses and charcuterie, seasonal produce, warm breads and something sweet, and setup and breakdown are included. It is an indoor or covered format, because Cape wind and direct summer sun are hard on a styled spread. Our grazing table page has the details.
If the new place came with a garden and a braai area, use it. A gourmet braai is the most Cape Town way to christen a home: the fire becomes the place people gather, lamb and snoek in season go on the grid, and the braai area is left clean. For larger garden parties, our guide to garden party catering in Cape Town covers shade, wind and layout.
