Planning a Golf Weekend in Somerset West — Rounds Out, Dinners In
Two rounds, a golf-estate house and one proper dinner in: that is the classic Helderberg weekend. Here is how to plan the meals around the tee times, what the travel line looks like, and what it costs.
The Helderberg's typical booking is the golf-estate weekend: four to eight guests, two rounds, and at least one proper dinner cooked at the house. Golf and lifestyle estates have modern, well-equipped kitchens and none of the access problems of the cliff suburbs, which makes them easy ground for a private chef. from R850 pp per person · Min invoice R3,900.
The short answer
The Helderberg's typical booking is the golf-estate weekend: four to eight guests, two rounds, and at least one proper dinner cooked at the house. Golf and lifestyle estates have modern, well-equipped kitchens and none of the access problems of the cliff suburbs, which makes them easy ground for a private chef.
Somerset West is Zone 2, with a published travel fee of R300–500 per day on its own quote line, and at 40 to 50 minutes from Cape Town it is the shortest Winelands drive we make. Menus are priced the same as in the city. Our private chef in Somerset West page covers the area; this guide is about fitting the food around the golf.

Why the Helderberg works for golf groups
The lodging mix suits a golf weekend: golf-estate homes, secure lifestyle estates and False Bay-view properties that host visiting families and golfing groups. Estates are quiet and secure, and their kitchens usually have full equipment. The only thing to arrange is the gate, and we sort out estate gate access before arrival.
The town itself is unpretentious, a working Winelands gateway rather than a postcard. Heritage Square and the old main road give guests somewhere pleasant to stroll before dinner, and Strand and Gordon's Bay beaches are minutes away for anyone who would rather not play the second round.
Timing dinner around the round
The kitchen works backwards from your tee times, not the other way round. On a dinner for eight after a morning round, the team comes through the estate gate at about 14:30 and starts prep while the group is still on the course or showering. Canapés go out on the patio at 18:00 as the False Bay breeze drops, the first course follows at 18:45 with a Helderberg white, and the main comes off the coals at 19:30 alongside a Bordeaux-style red from the estate corridor.
Dessert and coffee land around 20:30, the kitchen is restored by 21:45 and the team is home by 22:30. That timing matters on a golf weekend: an early finish keeps Sunday's tee time realistic and avoids the staff accommodation line that applies to finishes after 22:00.
The weekend, meal by meal
A pattern for a group of four to eight. Prices are published from-prices, before groceries at cost and travel.
- 01Friday, the arrival braai: a chef-run braai over wood suits the golf crowd, from R650 pp with a minimum of six guests and a R5,500 minimum invoice.
- 02Saturday, the proper dinner after the round: a plated private chef dinner. Small tables run on the small-group rate from R1,150 pp; tables of ten or more drop to from R850 pp.
- 03Several nights in: a villa chef dinner-service day is priced per day, from R5,950, rather than per head.
- 04Sunday, before the drive home: a single-meal chef day for breakfast or brunch, about four hours, from R4,250.
- 05Winter weekends lean into fireside menus; summer ones into the terrace, with the False Bay wind checked before we set the table outside.
Wine from the corridor
The Helderberg runs on serious wine history. Vergelegen, farming since 1700, anchors a corridor of heritage estates where cool maritime air off False Bay shapes Bordeaux-style reds. Dinner can be paired with wines made within a few kilometres of the table, and if the group buys bottles on a tasting between rounds, the chef can build the menu around them.
For a hosted table, our sommelier pairing add-on starts from R450 per person. Wine bills at cost, like the groceries. For how the Helderberg compares with the other wine towns, our Winelands private dining guide covers estate dining against in-villa dining.
For the non-golfers
Somerset West is a practical choice for mixed groups. Non-drinkers get the coast, wine people get the corridor, and nobody drives more than an hour. From June to November, whale season adds False Bay sighting trips to the itinerary, and the beaches at Strand and Gordon's Bay are close by.
If some of the group are coming from the Northern Suburbs or Durbanville, Somerset West is often closer than the city. Tell us where guests are travelling from and we plan the load-in around it.
When the group gets bigger
Golf weekends sometimes turn into a clubhouse lunch or a garden gathering for a wider circle. For estate clubhouses and big gardens, grazing and harvest tables start from R495 per person with a minimum of fifteen guests, with styling, setup and breakdown included. Plated dinners stay the better fit for smaller groups. Staffing, rentals and travel are itemised on the fixed quote before you pay a deposit.
If the trip also takes in Stellenbosch, nineteen kilometres away, a combined Helderberg and Stellenbosch weekend can share one team's travel line rather than paying it twice.
