Baby Shower Catering in Cape Town — Formats, Costs and a Calm Afternoon
A baby shower is an afternoon party where the guest of honour should never have to stand at a counter. Here is how to choose the food format, what each one costs on our card, and how to plan for the guest list you actually have.
Most baby showers in Cape Town suit one of three formats: a styled grazing table from R495 per person (minimum 15 guests), tray-passed canapés from R395 per person (minimum 20 guests), or a seated lunch priced like a private chef dinner, from R850 per person for ten or more and from R1,150 per person for three to six, with a R3,900 minimum invoice. Each is quoted fixed and itemised before you pay a deposit. from R495 pp per person · Min 15 guests.
The short answer
Most baby showers in Cape Town suit one of three formats: a styled grazing table from R495 per person (minimum 15 guests), tray-passed canapés from R395 per person (minimum 20 guests), or a seated lunch priced like a private chef dinner, from R850 per person for ten or more and from R1,150 per person for three to six, with a R3,900 minimum invoice. Each is quoted fixed and itemised before you pay a deposit.
Our catering in Cape Town page lists every format with its from-price and minimum. For a shower, the choice usually comes down to two questions: how many people are coming, and whether you want guests mingling or sitting down together.

Picking the format for your guest list
Match the format to the shape of the afternoon rather than to a theme. Our grazing table and canapé catering pages show each format in detail.
Included
- Fifteen to forty guests, mostly mingling: a grazing table is the natural centrepiece, with styling, setup, breakdown and dietary tent cards included.
- Twenty or more guests, standing and chatting between games and gifts: canapés passed in waves. Six pieces per guest covers a two-hour party; eight works when the canapés replace lunch.
Quoted separately
- Six to fourteen guests who would rather sit together: a seated lunch at one long table, family-style or plated.
- A small close-family shower of three to six: the small-table rate from R1,150 per person, which keeps the afternoon intimate and the cooking unhurried.
Three worked budgets

- 04Travel: included in Zone 1 (City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, Southern Suburbs, Constantia and Hout Bay); Stellenbosch, Paarl and Somerset West add R300–500 per day.
Planning food around the guest of honour
Tell us in the brief that the guest of honour is pregnant, and add anything her doctor or midwife has asked her to avoid. Common guidance covers things like raw shellfish, cured meats and unpasteurised cheese, but she knows her own list better than any rule of thumb. We treat it the way we treat every requirement: planned into the menu in the consult, so her plate looks like everyone else's rather than an apology.
The same goes for the rest of the room. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and allergy needs are mapped before the menu is written, and halaal-friendly service follows our strict protocols: separate prep, dedicated equipment and sourcing agreed with you beforehand. One line per guest is enough: the name, the requirement and how serious it is.
Little ones at the party
Showers often include older siblings and friends' children. Give us the number and ages, and simpler plates or a kids' platter can be planned in alongside the main spread. A grazing table is forgiving here, because children can graze at their own pace while the adults talk.
If you are serving drinks, plan the alcohol-free options with the same care as the food, for the guest of honour and anyone driving home.
The afternoon, start to finish
A typical timeline for a two-to-three-hour Saturday shower with a grazing table. A canapé party runs on a similar clock.
- 0111:30 — the team arrives, sets up and styles the table out of the way of the decorations.
- 0213:00 — guests arrive to a finished table; drinks poured.
- 0313:30–15:00 — games, gifts and speeches; the table is refreshed so it never looks picked over.
- 0415:00 — cake moment, whether it is your bakery's cake or a plated dessert reveal.
- 0516:00 — breakdown and cleanup; the host keeps the flowers and the leftovers.
Indoors, garden or stoep
Cape Town afternoons can be bright and windy, so decide where the food lives before you decide what it is. Grazing tables are an indoor or covered format, because wind and direct summer sun are hard on a styled spread. Canapés are more forgiving, because they come out in small batches. Our garden party catering guide covers the weather plan in detail, including the south-easter and what to do if it rains.
We cater and we serve; venue hire, décor and marquees are not part of a catering quote. If the plan relies on a tent or a hired room, book it first and share the layout, and we will plan the food and service routes around it.
Booking a baby shower
One to two weeks is comfortable for a staffed event outside peak season; December weekends and public holidays need more runway, and public holidays carry our published 1.5× multiplier. Send the date, the area, the rough headcount and the format you are leaning towards on WhatsApp. We reply within the hour, 08:00–20:00 SAST, and the fixed itemised quote arrives before you pay anything.
Organising it as a surprise? The same planning logic as our guide to a surprise birthday dinner at home applies: lock the headcount early, keep the setup out of sight, and let the team arrive quietly.
